The Online World (Unit 1)
All information must be transmitted from one place to another in order for it to be received across the globe.
There are three types of data transmission:
Simplex – One way transmission only. A one way system. For example, a radio.
Half duplex A two-way transmission, but it only allows one way at a time. For example a walkie-talkie.
Duplex (or full-duplex)- Two way transmission, that allows information to be transmitted at the same time. For example, a telephone.
Blogs: An online diary/journal on a specific topic(s) Eg WordPress
Chat: Messaging online.
Chat Room: Where someone can communicate with others online, in realtime.
Electronic Mail (Email): An account where you can send and receive text, files and documents. A source of communication.
Instant Messaging: A realtime conversation. Eg Facebook Messenger
netiquette: How you act online. (sounds like etiquette at the table)
Network of Friends: A group of friends online.
Newsgroup: A group of people with the same interests who posts information about that topic.
Online Community: A community of people online, such as friends, family and work.
Profile: How you care represented on networking sites.
Social Networking: Where you can connect with friends and family to keep up to date with their lives. A way to keep in touch with people worldwide. Eg Facebook, Twitter
Video Conferencing: Online conferences that can connect with many people globally at once to discuss business or personal. Eg, face time, Skype. It can also be called VoIP, Voice over IP, which means that you can communicated by voice by Internet Protocol (not using telephone lines)
Virtual World: An online world where you can talk to others. Eg using avatars
Vlogs: A video blog. Eg YouTube
Definition: Where you can store, back-up and share your data/files on other servers.
Many organisations provide facilities to store and share your files, such as GoogleDrive.
Data back-up is a method of making copies of files that can be retrieved if disater recovary is needed.
Definition-Companies advertise their products and services over the internt.
There are some common methods of online advertising.
1) Search Engines
Companies can register with bigger search engines (such as Google or Bing) so that their websites appear higher up on the results page. They can also pay for links that appear on the right hand side of the results page.
2) Banner and Pop ups
Banners are adverisements that appear at the top, side or bottom of a webpage.
Pop-ups pop up on top of a webpage which you need to exit from.
3) Email Marketing
Companies email advertisements to existing and potential customers to advertise their service/product. Also known as spam, if it is unsolicited (not addressed personally to the recipient).
4) Pay-per-click advertising
This advertising is called an affiliate model. Advertisements or links to a company’s website is placed on another company’s website (affiliates) and in return, that site is paid for hosting the advert every time someone clicks on the advert.
Online advertising must:
1) Capture the attention of the target audience by using colour, layout, design, graphics and animation
2) Be easily accessible.
3) Retain the consumer’s interest by directing them to interactive information. (eg a video)
